Internationally-renowned Alina
Bzhezhinska, one of the leading harpists in the world today, has built a
strong reputation for innovation. Having first appeared at Ronnie Scott’s in
2018, supporting a sold-out tribute to Alice and John Coltrane by Denys
Baptiste Quartet, Bzhezhinska continues her work around the globe with her
band HipHarpCollective. She recorded three critically acclaimed
albums – Inspirations (2017), Reflections (2022)
and Altera Vita (2024).
Creating a unique sound on
the harp, with layered effects and electronics, Bzhezhinska will be supported
by Menelik Claffey (bass), Matt Holmes (drums),
as well as a special guest appearance by British star saxophonist Denys
Baptiste.
Drawing from a variety of
influences, including Dorothy Ashby’s Afro-Harping, Alice
Coltrane’s spiritual outputs, Joe Henderson’s free form jazz experimentation
and 90s Acid Jazz and Trip Hop, Bzhezhinska (composer, bandleader and founder
of the HipHarpCollective) is a one-woman powerhouse on a mission to bring the
harp to the fore of contemporary music.

Beethoven String Quartet No. 8 in E minor, Op. 59 No. 2, ‘Rasumovsky’
Formed in 1974 by students at the Royal Academy of Music under the guidance of renowned quartet leader, Sidney Griller, the Coull Quartet rapidly achieved national recognition and now celebrate their 50th anniversary.
The Coull were appointed Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Warwick in 1977, a post they held for over forty years. The Quartet, which includes two of its founder members, has performed and broadcast extensively throughout the UK, and has made tours of Western Europe, the Americas, Australia, China, India and the Far East.
Mozart makes his only appearance for this year’s Season here, appropriately with his ‘Spring’ Quartet, Prokofiev’s First Quartet is a much-anticipated rarity in our programming and Beethoven’s second ‘Rasumovsky’ Quartet is an evergreen must-hear in a concert like this one.

Fresh off being nominated in
the Best Jazz Category at the 2025 MOBO Awards and releasing her latest
critically-acclaimed project FIELDNOTES: COMPLETE, South London
singer Ego Ella May takes to the stage for a special
performance in the Elgar Room.
A British-Nigerian
award-winning singer-songwriter and musician, Ego has an all-encompassing love
of music, which she channels into her own genre-blending R&B, neo-soul and
contemporary jazz compositions.
She has a high level of
admiration for people who show their vulnerabilities through music, and uses
this as a source of inspiration; “It’s so easy to lie to yourself and
others, so I really admire people who have the audacity to be truthful”. Her
songwriting takes influences from equal measures of reflective moments of
solitude and conversations with friends, which she demonstrates with effortless
power in each unique voicing.
The fast rising talent is
quickly building a noteworthy catalogue of releases including her impressive
2020 debut LP Honey for Wounds, a soul-tingling blend of jazz, R&B and neo
soul vocal musicality. Incredibly honest, self-penned, personal and observational
lyrics are laced with tales of self-healing, protest, love and loss, global
issues and more. She followed this up with her FIELDNOTES series of EP releases
and is set to release her eager anticipated sophomore album in 2025.

Composer and
multi-instrumentalist Cerys Hafana showcases her folk-inspired
innovations in the Elgar Room as part of Independent Venue Week,
with support from Owen Spafford and Louis
Campbell.
Mangling, mutating and
transforming traditional music, Cerys explores the creative possibilities and
unique qualities of the triple harp, and is also interested in found sounds,
archival materials and electronic processing. She comes from Machynlleth,
Wales, where rivers and roads meet on the way to the sea.
She has won over audiences
from Green Man to the Eisteddfod and from BBC 6 Music Festival to Celtic
Connections with her magical, progressive sound.
Edyf, her second album, drew inspiration from material
found in the Welsh National Library’s online archive, including fragments of
Psalm tunes, hymns about doomsday and philosophical musings on the length of
eternity, along with some original compositions, and was selected as one of The
Guardian’s Top Ten folk albums of 2022. Cerys’ latest EP, The Bitter,
released earlier in 2024 is an innovative exploration of some dark English and
Scottish ballads.

Sounds Queer presents a night of queer musical excellence as
part of the Royal Albert Hall’s Late Night Jazz series.
Intervention is a conversation between the organic and the
electronic world. Created by drummer/percussionist Lya (Colectiva)
alongside vocalist Plumm and featuring internationally
acclaimed Latinx pianist/producer Eliane Correa, they provide a
unique journey where energy and euphoria are transmitted through improvisation.
They address themes such as
female empowerment and mental health awareness by enticing them with the
natural world and its elements through music. Central to this vision is the
creation of unforgettable live performances capable of leaving a lasting imprint
on people’s lives, both mentally and emotionally. Combining poetic lyricism,
uplifting beats and harmonic synth-infused landscapes, Intervention are excited
to welcome you into their idiosyncratic world.
Sounds Queer platforms and
champions diverse voices from the LGBTQIA spectrum, straddling the void
between live music and queer nightlife bringing the queer party energy to live
